Come Walk with the Doc

A morning walk is the best combination of sports therapy and
psychotherapy available.  As for convenience, what other activity is so
available.  The best part is when you join me it makes my morning’s
work “a walk in the park” compared with hospital calls at two in the
morning.

Much has been written about movement as a form of therapy.  Like
many others I find a walk helps me get "unstuck" when confronting
difficult issues.  It spurs creative ways of thinking released by the
mood-improving effects of physical activity.

The mind-body connection is part of what we are.  In the early 80s,
Thaddeus Kostrubala's noted in his book “The Joy of Running” that
rhythmic exercise, like walking, can be conducive to health and mental
well being.  Indeed, movement propels us forward - literally and
figuratively.  It’s good for the body and the mind.  Granted, with the
preponderance of research we have in 2016, this is hardly news.

Perhaps you need a change of scenery for your Saturday morning
walk?  I have a beautiful setting, a paved path around a small lake
with turtles, birds, and with luck a complement of two and four legged
comrades.  Stay late and you’ll be presented with a choir of crooning
bull frogs serenading with their timeless one hit wonder.

Sitting is passive.  In excess it’s deflating.  Walking is moving
ahead.  A daily walk is medicine for the body and the soul.  Taken
daily it offers amazing benefits.  Join me for a walk that’s a step toward
better health.

Need a Good Read?  I suggest Bill Bryson’s style of light humor
sprinkled with timeless wisdom.  If not a fan, consider the snippet
below as a taste of what’s ahead when you curl up with one of his
entertaining travel books.  “Black bears rarely attack. But here's the
thing. Sometimes they do. All bears are agile, cunning and immensely
strong, and they are always hungry. If they want to kill you and eat
you, they can, and pretty much whenever they want. That doesn't
happen often, but - and here is the absolutely salient point - once
would be enough.” - Bill Bryson, “A Walk in the Woods”

Laughter is good medicine.  Bill Bryson’s brand of humor is
actually funny. As one reviewer suggested, … they're beautifully
crafted. His easy, relaxed style conceals impeccable artistry. His
sentences are well measured, neatly shaped and generally delightful.
As a creator of epigrams he has no modern rival. He's been quietly
raining down gold from the first two sentences of his first book
onwards: “I come from Des Moines. Somebody had to."

Looking for good medicine.  Take one of these Bryson books
home!

1. A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian
Trail
2. Notes from a Big Country (UK) / I'm a Stranger Here Myself
3. A Short History of Nearly Everything
4. A Really Short History of Nearly Everything

“My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty.
She's ninety-seven now, and we don't know where the heck she is.” ~
Ellen DeGeneres

Often, a pedestrian is someone who thought there were a couple of
