   Should You Walk Counterclockwise?

    For most right-handed people, walking
counterclockwise is a natural inclination.  This is
believed to result from the dominant brain
hemisphere though some attribute it to muscle
mechanics.

As you might expect, lefties march to a
different brain hemisphere and naturally prefer
to walk clockwise.  Guess that’s why most
circulate counterclockwise on morning walks
around the lake.  Certainly, no one has to be
bound by their brain’s dominant hemispheres.
There can be advantages to walking opposite
to your predisposition.  With the preponderance
of people walking counterclockwise, you will
meet many more nods and smiles by walking
clockwise.  Interestingly, most right-handed
people prefer to draw circles counterclockwise,
while most left-handed people prefer to draw
circles in a clockwise direction.

While considering the direction to walk in,
you may be pleased to discover there is a small
advantage in walking in the direction of the
earth’s rotation.  This is thanks to Special
Relativity, which tells us that a faster moving
clock will run slower. In essence, as you walk in
the direction of the earth’s rotation you are
moving faster than the earth.  Personally, I don’t
pursue this strategy.  Should you need an extra
fraction of a nanosecond, then definitely go for it.

If curiosities about our human nature and the
world about us intrigue you, then Ellen J. Langer’
s book, “
Counterclockwise: A Proven Way to
Think Yourself Younger and Healthier” has
plenty to offer.  As an academic, Dr. Langer’s
writing style may be more detailed (long-
winded) than you prefer.  If that’s a problem then
her video, “
Counterclockwise: the power of
possibility' at Happiness & Its Causes” will
better suit you.  As an alternative, the
video
review by Brian Johnson provides a nice
overview of the books major ideas.  If that’s
more than you have time for, the message Dr.
Langer communicates is well summarized in the
quote. “Too many of us believe the world is to
be discovered, rather than a product of our own
construction and thus to be invented.”

Dr. Langer’s insights into successful aging,
mindful aging, and health shines light on many
preconceived ideas.  From her research come
studies where turning back the clock
psychologically also turns age back physically?
The key idea from her book is that biological
age and health depend greatly on what we do
and think.  It’s fair to say that Ellen Langer gives
new meaning to the cliché, “You are only as old
as you feel.”

Want to feel younger.  My ‘counterclockwise’
recommendation is a walk around the lake
Saturday mornings.  If you doubt that regular
walks are right for you, then look over the “100
Benefits of Walking” that follow.  If you don’t find
at least one benefit, I’d be surprised.
