The Doctor’s Touch

At Stanford, Dr. Abraham Varghese’s is on a mission to bring back the art of the physical exam – what
some might call the old-fashioned medical art of touching, looking and listening.

His goal is to bring back the once prized, almost magical skills of the doctor who missed little and could
swiftly diagnose a peculiar walk, sluggish thyroid or leaky heart valve using keen eyes, practiced hands
and a stethoscope.

In an age of advancing technology, the art and science of medicine may seem disparate worlds, but Dr.
Verghese insists that for him they are one.

Today, most medical schools have let the exam slide in favor of an MRI other advanced tests.  Often
new doctors have little experience in testing a patient’s reflexes or palpating a spleen.

In the video that follows, Dr. Verghese's provides an inspiring explanation of how the art of the doctor’s
touch complements the science of medicine.
